War in Afghanistan

According to the latest reports the allied forces in Afghanistan are in serious trouble and without an increase in troop numbers and revised strategy we may be facing a defeat in this troubled region.  Many empires have failed to conquer and subdue this region stretching back into time from Alexander the Great to the Modern Soviet Empire.

This is a gut check moment for President Obama.  How will the POTUS respond to this crucial moment in the war against terror.  The preliminary assessment of his reaction is not good for the overall chances of victory in Afghanistan.   The issue is what strategy will prove successful in Afghanistan?  The answer to that question is certainly not black and white.

Part 2
Apparently the Obama administration is starting to begin the liberal two-step that characterized America's eventual retreat and humiliation in Vietnam. According to an article in the Washington Post Obama's civilian advisers are already discussing a soft suicide plan for eventual surrender.
But before any decision is made, some of President Obama's civilian advisers have proposed looking at other, less costly options to address his primary goal of preventing al-Qaeda from reestablishing itself in Afghanistan. Those options include a redirection of U.S. efforts -- away from protecting the Afghan population and building the Afghan state and toward persuading the Taliban to stop fighting -- as well as an escalation of targeted attacks against al-Qaeda itself in Pakistan and elsewhere.

Obama himself is starting to back track on his aggressive campaign stratetgy the rhetoric where he insisted that Afghanistan was the real war and that Bush had failed to recognize this.  Essentially, Obama was in favor of military intervention to protect Americans from harm during the election.  However, once Obama was elected we now see his true liberal colors and he is well on his way to pursuing a cut and run strategy in Afghanistan.
Obama's public remarks on Afghanistan indicate that he has begun to rethink the counterinsurgency strategy he set in motion six months ago, even as his generals have embraced it. The equation on the ground has changed markedly since his March announcement, with attacks by Taliban fighters showing greater sophistication, U.S. casualties rising, and the chances increasing that Afghanistan will be left with an illegitimate government after widespread fraud in recent presidential elections.
Remember Obama appointed General McChrystal and hand picked him to handle the military operations in Afghanistan.  Now when the McChrystal recommends the tools and resources needed to succeed in Afghanistan the President is no longer listening.  Obama has show time and time again that he does nothing that he does not want to do.
